Tax relief has been granted to many communities this year due to hurricanes, flooding and fires, but tax relief due to seawater intrusion will sound novel to most. In Louisiana, saltwater has infiltrated municipal drinking water supplies on the coast because the Mississippi River’s water level isn’t high enough to force the seawater back. The IRS has announced that residents and businesses of affected Louisiana parishes have until Feb. 15, 2024, to file returns and make tax payments that normally would be due on or after Sept. 20, 2023, and before Feb. 15. The relief includes taxpayers who were granted extensions to Oct. 16 to file their 2022 returns, but not 2022 payments due.
