Most business owners and managers understand their responsibilities to withhold Social Security, Medicare and income taxes from employee wages. One Florida staffing company manager who didn’t follow the law learned about consequences the hard way: He was sentenced to 48 months in prison. The manager admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida that he and his associates had failed to withhold and report to the IRS employee wages and had defrauded the agency out of more than $3.5 million in employment taxes. The employees in question weren’t authorized to work in the U.S., so the manager also faced immigration crime charges. A ruling on restitution is pending.
