The IRS Whistleblower Program Improvement Act

Since 2007, the IRS’s Whistleblower Office has collected more than $7.37 billion as a result of its investigations. Now, a bipartisan group of lawmakers wants to update the program. The IRS Whistleblower Program Improvement Act recently advanced out of the U.S. House’s Ways and Means committee with full support. If enacted, it would enable greater anonymity for whistleblowers in the U.S. Tax Court, provide a more favorable standard of review in appeals, require payment of interest if awards are delayed and allow whistleblowers to deduct attorneys’ fees. The bill’s sponsors say it will cost $44 million over 10 years to implement but believe its provisions will lead to higher tax collections.
