The death of a loved one may require you to file the individual’s final income tax return. Fortunately, this melancholy task is similar to filing your own return. You’ll need to complete a Form 1040, sign your own name (and indicate your relationship to the deceased), write “Deceased” and the date of death on the form, and submit it to the IRS by April 15. Any tax owed should be paid by the deceased’s estate. If a refund is expected and you aren’t a surviving spouse filing jointly, you must submit a special request. In general, an estate’s administrator or executor is responsible for a final tax return. Contact us if you need help.
