What the IRS Is Saying About This Tax Season

Several observers, including the National Taxpayer Advocate, have warned that staffing cuts and new tax laws may hinder the IRS this filing season. But the U.S. Treasury Dept. remains optimistic. Addressing the USC Gould School of Law Tax Institute, Senior Advisor Don Snyder pointed out that the tax season started “on time and on schedule” on Jan. 26, 2026. He credited Secretary Scott Bessent and other IRS leaders and spoke of a philosophy that encourages flexible standards and targeted anti-abuse provisions. Snyder also asserted that last year’s tax law will yield roughly $220 billion in tax benefits to individuals in 2026, including an average tax cut of $936 for around 133 million filers.
