Scam Alert: Seniors Are Being Targeted by Fake IRS Calls

Americans age 65 and older are disproportionately targeted by tax fraud schemes. The IRS warns seniors about impersonation scams where criminals call and claim to be IRS employees or other government officials. Scammers may tell would-be victims they owe tax and must pay immediately or be arrested. It’s important to know that most legitimate IRS communications, including notices of tax owed, are mailed via the U.S. Postal Service. Also, the IRS will never ask you to pay over the phone with a credit card or with gift cards, and the agency doesn’t have the authority to arrest you. Hang up on any suspicious call and visit https://bit.ly/3Z59E8o  to report the incident to the IRS.
