Should I claim Head of Household?

When you file your 2025 tax return, should you do so as a head of household? Assuming you qualify, it could be more favorable than filing as single. To be eligible as head of household, you must be single and maintain a home that for more than half the year is also occupied by a “qualifying child” or otherwise support a dependent relative. Generally, qualifying children are under age 19 (or are students under 24) and don’t provide a majority of their own financial support. Only the “custodial” parent based on Internal Revenue Code rules can claim this status. So if you’re divorced and share custody of children, it’s important to review those rules.
