President Trump’s trade war has suffered a major setback. The U.S. Court of International Trade ruled that the Trump administration overstepped its authority by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs on imports from U.S. trading partners. The court ordered a halt to most of Trump’s tariffs and further barred future modifications. The three-judge panel gave the administration 10 days to complete a formal process of stopping the tariffs. The ruling includes the 10% tariffs Trump imposed on most imports, as well as additional tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico. (It doesn’t cover specific tariffs on steel, aluminum and cars.) Trump is appealing the ruling.
