The revolving door at the IRS commissioner’s office continues to turn. The IRS has now lost its fourth leader in three months. Acting Commissioner Gary Shapley was replaced after less than one week on the job. It was announced that Deputy U.S. Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender will now assume the role of acting commissioner. In January, then-IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel resigned on President Trump’s inauguration day. Werfel was followed by an IRS official, Doug O’Donnell, who retired after one month. Melanie Krause followed O’Donnell. After two months, Krause accepted a voluntary buyout. President Trump’s pick for a permanent commissioner hasn’t yet been confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
