Did you know that 2025’s Tax Day marked the 70th anniversary of filing federal income tax returns by an April 15 due date? Between 1918 and 1955, the deadline was March 15. As the tax code became more complex, Tax Day was moved back to give taxpayers, tax professionals and the IRS additional time to prepare and process an increasing number of forms. Still, there are plenty of historical exceptions to the April 15 date, such as when it falls on a weekend or holiday. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 deadline was extended to July 15, and the 2021 filing date was moved to May 17. And of course, victims of federally declared disasters generally are given more time to file.
