Danny Werfel has stepped down from his post as IRS Commissioner. He was scheduled to leave the job in Nov. 2027. However, President Trump has nominated former Republican Congressman Billy Long for the position. During his tenure, Werfel oversaw the Inflation Reduction Act infusion of funds to, among other things, upgrade IRS technology and boost enforcement efforts. During his time in Congress, Long cosponsored a bill that would repeal federal income and payroll taxes and replace them with a 23% national retail sales tax. A similar bill was introduced in Congress recently by Republican lawmakers. Long would have to be confirmed by the Senate before he assumed the IRS commissioner position.
