Dyed diesel fuel is the primary fuel used in heavy construction and farming equipment, as well as off-road vehicles. These machines and vehicles are being used to help storm victims recover from Hurricane Helene. The IRS is offering penalty relief to any person that sells or uses dyed diesel fuel for highway use. Specifically, the IRS won’t levy a fine if the operator or seller pays the 24.4 cents per gallon tax that’s normally applied to diesel fuel for highway use. The relief is retroactive to Sept. 26, 2024, and remains in effect through Oct. 15, 2024. It’s available in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina; and certain counties in Florida, Tennessee and Virginia.
