The IRS has reported a significant advance in reducing paper filings, part of its 10-year plan to improve service and upgrade technology. Its Document Upload Tool enables taxpayers to submit most documents electronically so long as they can provide their name; an access code or notice or letter number; and a Social Security or taxpayer ID number. The IRS says that use of this tool, along with newer scanning and mail-sorting machinery, potentially eliminates 125 million paper documents annually. In the past year, the agency also added 23 tax forms in electronic formats. Approximately 94% of individual taxpayers can now submit their IRS correspondence electronically.
