The IRS is reminding Americans that the right to privacy is included in its Taxpayer Bill of Rights. This means that any investigation will be “no more intrusive than necessary.” For example, the IRS states on its website that if it doesn’t suspect you’re hiding income, it generally won’t ask questions about your spending and lifestyle. The IRS adds that it will follow due process laws. It can’t seize your home without first getting court approval and showing that there’s no other way to collect tax owed. Also, the IRS isn’t allowed to seize certain personal items, such as clothing and undelivered mail. Contact us if you receive an IRS letter or notice and are unsure about how to respond.
