July 30 was National Whistleblower Appreciation Day. The IRS’s Whistleblower Office reports that from the time it issued its first award in 2007 through June 2024, it paid more than $1.2 billion in awards. This is based on successfully collecting $7 billion from noncompliant taxpayers. IRS awards paid to whistleblowers generally range between 15% and 30% of the proceeds collected and attributed to their information. Fun fact: National Whistleblower Appreciation Day is recognized on July 30 because America’s first whistleblower law was passed by the Continental Congress on July 30, 1778. The first law related to whistleblowers on tax violations was enacted almost 90 years later in March 1867.
