WBO reports on cash award to whistleblowers

Taxpayers who give the IRS Whistleblower Office (WBO) credible information about unpaid taxes may qualify for cash awards. The program has been around for a long time in some form. According to a recent WBO report, the number of awards shrank a bit in fiscal year 2023 from FY 2022, but the dollar value more than doubled. In FY 2022, a total of 132 awards paid out $37.8 million. In FY 2023, a total of 121 awards paid out $88.8 million. The rewards came from information that led to collections of $338 million. The top three most common allegations were: unreported or underreported income, improper deductions and failure to file tax returns. Here’s the WBO report: https://bit.ly/4eIchE1
