At a Tax Forum event, tax experts from both sides of the aisle agreed that bipartisanship is the key for “more stable, more predictable” tax reform. Katherine Mongé, a tax advisor to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), said that Democrats were “left out of the room” during negotiations over the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. As a result, “there’s no ownership of the policy decisions that were made in 2017 on the Democratic side.” George Callas, senior tax counsel to former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), said that “the best permanent resolution of the TCJA next year would require a divided government.” Mongé and Callas also agreed that social media can have a negative impact on tax policy.
