The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) has asked the IRS to make it easier for taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas to request filing extensions. In a Dec. 11, 2023, letter, the AICPA suggested the IRS acknowledge receipt of extension requests within 30 days and make decisions about the requests within 90 days. The organization also asked the IRS to provide blanket automatic extensions for disasters that cause major damage to most taxpayers in a region and to stop requiring affected taxpayers to provide a reason for their extension requests. The AICPA believes adopting these measures will save time and money, both for taxpayers and the IRS.
