Portions of Massachusetts and Maine have been declared federal disaster areas following the landfall of Hurricane Lee on Sept. 15, 2023. Residents and businesses in the affected counties may qualify for tax relief. The IRS has extended most filing deadlines falling on or after Sept. 15, 2023, and before Feb. 15, 2024, to Feb. 15, 2024. The relief also provides extra time to make tax payments and excuses late penalties for employment and excise tax deposits due between Sept. 15, and Oct. 2. However, taxpayers must make their deposits by Oct. 2. Finally, impacted taxpayers can claim disaster-related, uninsured casualty losses on their 2022 or 2023 income tax returns.
