A man who owned several companies was sentenced in 2022 to 30 months in prison for tax evasion and employment tax crimes. According to the U.S. Dept. of Justice, he withheld more than $1 million in taxes from his employees’ wages but didn’t pay required taxes to the IRS. After serving about 12 months of his sentence, he asked a U.S. District Court for a “compassionate release” to a halfway house or home confinement. His reason: Incarceration causes his family hardship. The court denied the request, stating it didn’t rise to the level of an “extraordinary and compelling” reason. Also, his crime was serious: It cost the government more than $2.8 million. (Manzione, DC NY, 8/14/23)
