If an individual owes back taxes and thinks the IRS has forgotten about it, he or she should think again. Taxpayers with balances due may not have received collection notices for the last 18 months, National Taxpayer Advocate, Erin Collins said recently. Some processes, such as the sending of notices were put on hold due to the extra workload and diminished workforce brought by COVID-19. Collins is concerned that taxpayers may not realize that interest and penalties still apply. The IRS is developing a plan to resume sending notices. “Stay tuned,” Collins said, predicting that notices will begin rolling out again in a matter of months.
