The IRS continues to have a backlog of unprocessed paper amended tax returns, the National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA) recently reported to Congress. However, the overall backlog of original and amended paper returns has been significantly reduced in the past year. “The IRS reduced its backlog of unprocessed paper tax returns from 13.3 million at the end of the 2022 filing season to 2.6 million at the end of the 2023 filing season,” the NTA stated. Part of the reason for the backlog is the IRS still does a lot of manual processing. Another reason for the backlog: An influx of fraudulent Employee Retention Credit claims.
