IRS Tax season update

U.S. Treasury and IRS officials say that early efforts to deploy funds provided by the Inflation Reduction Act have led to a much smoother tax filing season this year. These efforts include expanding electronic filing tools and implementing paper return scanning. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel reports that the agency is “fully caught up” with tax year 2022 individual tax returns that were filed without errors. “We have zero backlog.” (However, the IRS is working through amended returns and returns with errors.) A key difference has been the launch of a new initiative called Digital Intake. It allows processors to digitally scan paper returns and reduce manual, digit-by-digit entry.
