On March 9, 2023, Daniel Werfel was confirmed as the IRS’s new commissioner. He can expect scrutiny from the Republican-controlled House Ways and Means Committee, which recently established an IRS watchdog office and a direct line for IRS whistleblowers. But Werfel was confirmed by a bipartisan vote that included six Republican senators. Still, Republicans have expressed outrage over the $80 billion allocated to the IRS by the Inflation Reduction Act. In response, Werfel has said he intends to adhere to Treasury Secretary Yellen’s policy of not using new funding to increase audits on taxpayers making less than $400,000 a year. Werfel replaces former IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig.
