IRS launches Information Return Intake System for 1099s

On Jan. 23, 2023, the IRS launched the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) to help taxpayers electronically file Forms 1099. Although individuals, businesses of all sizes, not-for-profits, government agencies and third parties can all use IRIS, the new portal is expected to benefit small businesses in particular. The service is free, and taxpayers can upload 21 different Forms 1099, starting with calendar year 2022. To enroll, they must first apply for a Transmitter Control Code and log in with an ID.me username. Application processing is expected to take up to 45 days. The IRIS rollout is part of a larger IRS effort to reduce the number of paper forms it must process.
