Now that the U.S. House has elected a speaker, it’s down to business. On Jan. 9, Jason Smith (R-MO) beat several competitors to become chair of the powerful Ways and Means Committee. He announced several agenda items, including rescinding the $80 billion recently allocated to the IRS to hire new employees, upgrade technology and fix customer service problems. He also vowed to invite the IRS Commissioner to testify before his committee about alleged information leaks and political targeting. In the past, Smith has voiced support for making permanent expiring tax provisions in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, including the pass-through business income deduction, which is scheduled to end after 2025.
