House wants review of IRS audits

Bipartisan members of the U.S. House of Representatives want to investigate certain taxpayer audits. Members of the House Ways and Means Committee asked the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) to review whether tax returns of former FBI director James Comey and his deputy Andrew McCabe were targeted for research audits. These audits involve greater scrutiny than most audits and taxpayers are randomly chosen. Both FBI officials were removed from office by then-president Donald Trump. A spokesperson for IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said the “IRS has strong safeguards in place” to protect “against politically motivated audits.” TIGTA hasn’t yet committed to a review.
