IRS Improvements Needed

Improvement is still needed in many areas at the IRS, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). The GAO provides Congress and federal agencies with non-partisan information that can be used to improve government and save taxpayers money. In a letter to the IRS Commissioner, the GAO noted that since June 2021, only four of 25 needed improvements have been addressed and fully implementing these open recommendations could significantly improve IRS operations. Areas that still need improvement include: taxpayer services; reduction of tax fraud and improper payments; cybersecurity; information reporting; audit effectiveness and strategic and human capital management.
